The Frozen Tear, The Acetate EP [IAS 7009]
Lost 60s Acid Folk/Blues Rock Recordings from The Frozen Tear Finally Released on Vinyl
Long‑forgotten recordings from Plymouth’s cult 60s outfit The Frozen Tear are being released for the first time as a four‑track acid folk/blues rock EP. Known among collectors for their impossibly rare and highly sought‑after psychedelic single — of which only a handful of copies are known to exist — the band’s story has remained one of British rock’s great “what‑ifs.”
This new EP presents what should have been the group’s follow‑up single, but which never reached the pressing plant. Two of the tracks have never been released in any form, making this the first time the complete session has appeared on vinyl.
The accompanying insert tells the remarkable story of the band and bassist/vocalist Tony Way, whose career path intersected with some of the biggest names of the era. From supporting major 60s pop acts, to being turned down by The Beatles’ Apple label, to Tony’s fateful decision not to front Uriah Heep, the narrative captures a band on the brink of wider success.
Musically, the EP showcases four powerful tracks that highlight the group’s distinctive blend of blues‑infused psychedelia — songs that, had they been released at the time, might well have propelled The Frozen Tear to far greater heights.
Tony Way recalls, “Putting out the Acetate EP exactly as it was originally recorded would be something really nice and satisfying and long overdue. With two of the tracks never having been released before, it feels like a completion of the band’s musical output”
This 7” EP edition of The Frozen Tear comes housed in a hand‑numbered picture sleeve, accompanied by a four‑page full‑colour insert featuring exclusive extracts from our recent interview with bassist and vocalist Tony Way. Also included is a second insert reproducing the original Apple Records rejection letter, a remarkable piece of the band’s history that captures the near‑miss moments surrounding their brief but fascinating career. This carefully curated package offers collectors not only four long‑lost tracks, but a vivid snapshot of a band who came far closer to breaking through than the history books ever recorded.
